Video tape has been used as the primary storage medium for video surveillance
for decades. Video tapes are cumbersome, low resolution, and are prone to
interference and breakage. Additionally, video tapes generally record for about
eight hours. Therefore, to record a 24 hour period, a worker has to change the
tape three times a day adding significant labor costs.
As you can see from the graph below, the rapid decrease of
digital storage has caused a revolution in video surveillance. The cost of
digital storage is now less expensive than analog storage. Therefore, companies
will begin to replace their analog surveillance systems with digital
